The Bank

In this District, about 80% of the people depend on Agriculture.  The Idukki District Co-operative Bank Ltd. No.4334 registered under the Kerala Co-operative Societies Act 1969, (Act 21 of 1969) on 31.01.1973 and started functioning on 01.07.1973 under the license of Reserve Bank of India vide No. ACD.KR.17C with its headquarters at Idukki.  Its area of operation extends to the whole of the Idukki Revenue District.  The District Co-operative Bank is the bank of  the rural people.  Development of rural banking has become the subject of prime importance.  The bank has recorded considerable increase in business in recent years both in regard to the deposits and advances.  Responsibility of the bank for development finance necessitating formulation and implementation of schemes in the field of agriculture and allied activities has also increased in recent years.  As a result, the Bank faced with many problems in relation to proper use of resources including credit requirements of the agriculturists and non-agriculturists of  the community.  The Idukki District Co-operative Bank is shouldering a great responsibility of assisting the rural poor.  Besides it has to face severe competition from other Scheduled Banks for deposit mobilization and disbursing of rural credit.  But the Bank has succeeded the challenges.

Banking Systems

The Co-operative system with district is well developed with Idukki District Co-operative Bank as the apex body with 46 branches.  When compared with the total strength of bank branches in Idukki District, i.e. 187 numbers, 25% of the banking system is concentrated with Idukki District Co-operative Bank.

The lending pattern of the bank is routed out through the 46 branches of the bank and 75 affiliated PACS in the district.    The Credit-Deposit Ratio (CD Ratio) of the bank is ……%.  Besides, this Banks concentration to the total deposit and loan in the district is 30%.

Little Start

Idukki District Co-operative Bank started with 3 branches of Kottayam District Co-operative Bank (Adimaly, Munnar & Kattappana) and 1 branch of Eranakulam District Co-operative Bank (Thodupuzha).  34 Employees of those banks comprised the initial team of staff. 36 lakhs deposits and 97 lakhs loans transferred constituted the starting business.

Bigger Growth

After 38 years, the bank made remarkable progress.  Staff strength increased to 315, branches grows upto 46.  Deposit increased more than 2637 times as 94947 lakhs.  Loans and advances increased 1280 times and touched 124118 lakhs.  Membership increased to 327 and the share capital contributed by them reached Rs.1020.58 lakhs.

All the past, there have had never happened a loss in the history of the Bank.  The net profit has been touched to 304.35 lakhs during the year of 2011-12.  


NABARD selected the bank as the best District Co-operative Bank in Kerala during 1996-97.  The Bank got 1st prize in the 1st deposit mobilisation campaign introduced by the Government of Kerala during the year 1976. The bank has also got the best performance award of State Co-operative Bank during 2004-05. The Bank maintains ‘A’ class Audit status all the years.
